Biden condemns assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise

President Joe Biden condemned the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, who was shot lifeless by attackers in his non-public residence in a single day.

“America affords condolences to the individuals of Haiti, and we stand prepared to help as we proceed to work for a secure and safe Haiti,” Biden said in a statement Wednesday.

Haiti’s interim prime minister, Claude Joseph, confirmed the killing and stated the army and police have been in command of safety within the nation. Joseph added that the primary woman, Martine Moise, was injured within the assault and is being handled at a hospital.

The White Home stated it was nonetheless gathering details about what occurred within the early morning assassination.

Biden is anticipated to be briefed later Wednesday on the matter by his nationwide safety staff, press secretary Jen Psaki stated throughout an interview with MSNBC. 

The assault provides to the political upheaval within the Caribbean nation, which has been dealing with a surge in gang violence, Covid-19 circumstances and anti-government protests, the Associated Press reported. 

Moise, 53, was accused of attempting to extend his energy and confronted months of calls for from opposition leaders to step down, in keeping with the AP. He had been ruling by decree for over a 12 months after Haiti didn’t maintain elections.
